Why TPH 101?

Globally, we are living longer, more active lives, with accompanying greater wear and tear on our bodies – and on our joints in particular.  Despite the many major medical advances in this century, osteoarthritis (OA), also known as degenerative joint disease, remains a widespread, devastating condition that becomes more common as we age.

The most common joint disorder in the world, OA occurs in 14% of US adults aged 25 and older and 34% of those 65 and older – affecting the lives of over 42 million people in the United States alone.  As the leading cause in the US of hip and knee replacement, OA is more prevalent in people with obesity and Type 2 diabetes, both correlated with the development of more frequent and severe OA than in populations without these conditions.

Unfortunately, these populations are among the patients most commonly seeking joint replacement surgery – and are also most at risk for developing infections from such procedures.

The occurrence of diabetes and obesity and demand for total joint replacement are all expected to increase dramatically over the next 25 years.  Telephus is dedicated to developing products to help patients reap the benefits and reduce the risks of joint replacement surgery,  which for most patients will be a lifelong solution for serious OA of the hip or knee.
